Statement of Black Men Against the Exploitation of Black Women E-mail

Six years have gone by since we first heard the allegations that R. Kelly had filmed himself having sex with an underage girl. During that time we have seen the videotape being hawked on street corners in Black communities, as if the dehumanization of one of our own was not at stake. We have seen entertainers rally around him and watched his career reach new heights despite the grave possibility that he had molested and urinated on a 13-year old girl. We saw African Americans purchase millions of his records despite the long history of such charges swirling around the singer. Worst of all, we have witnessed the sad vision of Black people cheering his acquittal with a fervor usually reserved for community heroes and shaken our heads at the stunning lack of outrage over the verdict in the broader Black community.

r_kellyOver these years, justice has been delayed and it has been denied. Perhaps a jury can accept R. Kelly's absurd defense and find "reasonable doubt" despite the fact that the film was shot in his home and featured a man who was identical to him. Perhaps they doubted that the young woman in the courtroom was, in fact, the same person featured in the ten year old video. But there is no doubt about this: some young Black woman was filmed being degraded and exploited by a much older Black man, some daughter of our community was left unprotected, and somewhere another Black woman is being molested, abused or raped and our callous handling of this case will make it that much more difficult for her to come forward and be believed. And each of us is responsible for it.

We have proudly seen the community take to the streets in defense of Black men who have been the victims of police violence or racist attacks, but that righteous outrage only highlights the silence surrounding this verdict.

We believe that our judgment has been clouded by celebrity-worship; we believe that we are a community in crisis and that our addiction to sexism has reached such an extreme that many of us cannot even recognize child molestation when we see it.

We recognize the absolute necessity for Black men to speak in a single, unified voice and state something that should be absolutely obvious: that the women of our community are full human beings, that we cannot and will not tolerate the poisonous hatred of women that has already damaged our families, relationships and culture.

We believe that our daughters are precious and they deserve our protection. We believe that Black men must take responsibility for our contributions to this terrible state of affairs and make an effort to change our lives and our communities.

This is about more than R. Kelly's claims to innocence. It is about our survival as a community. Until we believe that our daughters, sisters, mothers, wives and friends are worthy of justice, until we believe that rape, domestic violence and the casual sexism that permeates our culture are absolutely unacceptable, until we recognize that the first priority of any community is the protection of its young, we will remain in this tragic dead-end.

We ask that you:

  • Sign your name if you are a Black male who supports this statement:      http://www.petitiononline.com/rkelly/petition.html

  • Forward this statement to your entire network and ask other Black males to sign as well
  • Make a personal pledge to never support R. Kelly again in any form or fashion, unless he publicly apologizes for his behavior and gets help for his long-standing sexual conduct, in his private life and in his music
  • Make a commitment in your own life to never to hit, beat, molest, rape, or exploit Black females in any way   and, if you have, to take ownership for your behavior, seek emotional and spiritual help, and, over time, become a voice against all forms of Black female exploitation
  • Challenge other Black males, no matter their age, class or educational background, or status in life, if they engage in behavior and language that is exploitative and or disrespectful to Black females in any way. If you say nothing, you become just as guilty.
  • Learn to listen to the voices, concerns, needs, criticisms, and challenges of Black females, because they are our equals, and because in listening we will learn a new and different kind of Black manhood

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for this well thought out and concise statement.

It makes me proud to see Black men stand up and speak from a place of love (because that's what it is) about this issue. It gives me hope that change is possible.

I know you'll probably have push back from naysayers but it's time that we wake up as a community about sexualized exploitation that's happening to the women in our lives. I hope folks take the time to think of what you've said and really reflect. The only way we'll survive as a community is if we count everyone as being of worth, not just a select few.

Peace and love upon you.

Just Showing My Support
written by Sherine, June 23, 2008
On behalf of my mother and all other victim of sexual abuse, I thank you for doing this. The way the black community has reacted to R. Kelly's pedophilia has broken my heart into a million little pieces. I hope more people like you will help me put those pieces back together by organizing boycotts like this.

BLACKMEN SHOULD CHALLENGE THE PORNOGRAPHICALLY, CAPITALISTIC SYSTEMS?
written by Laymen Konvurse, June 25, 2008
I guess R. Kelly's the musical industry's O. J. Simpson? He's found not guilty/acquitted, then the public wants to convict him. Their relativity extends to the AOL poll which shows Blackmen get falsely convicted and executed, harassed and beatdown by society, at-large, we don't mind seeing any "Brother" win, in court. Daily we see white women and families killed by their fellow white males, yet there are no petitions? If anybody should be petitioned it should be this girl's mother, then the educational and media industries (TV/Cable/magazines/capitalism). R. Kelly didn't kill anyone, but the negative publicity he's receiving from this--particularly the gaydaistic controlled media--shows that they're our worst enemies. Prof. Cobb may be a sodomite, himself? It's not that his goal isn't admirable, it's just that why is his first order of business against a Blackman; while the porno and TV channels are exploiting our females to a far worse degree, than the ["perverted"] R. Kelly types? MLKJ-Muhammad always taught me: 'if you're going to fight and challenge some issue, challenge and be man enough to face the highest level.' Black military men can be "heroes" for dying for Israeli (Jewish) and European causes, but they can never be seen as heroes on our children's everyday (Jewish controlled) TV series and programs. Petition that.

Father, brother, husband, son, uncle...all to a woman!
written by Elton, June 26, 2008
I was awaiting Mr. Kelly's trial and I walked by a co-workers desk. She had an R. Kelly CD so I picked it up and read the titles. Not one of the titles on that particular CD would vindicate Mr. Kelly, but they would all convict him had they been submitted as evidence to his character.

As a man, especially a "Black Man", I am responsible for my sisters even if they want me to treat them as "less" than they are.

Kelly is not the only one that should be on the list of "ARTIST's" who need to be boycotted and educated about the harm that they are causing by the product that they produce.

I am a school district electrician and last year I was comissioned to convert a classroom to accomodate 19 teen mothers from one highschool. I don't think I need to explain what will happen to most of those girls and the children they produce.

We "Artist's" need to educate, not degredate.

PETITION B/FEMALES, DON'T BE SWAYED BY "FEMINISM (LESBIANISM)," CAPITAL GREED
written by Laymen Konvurse, June 26, 2008
THE POLITICAL

DOG WAGGING of

‘BLACK FEMINISM’

Frank Talk
September 18, 2007

Black feminism is nothing but a myth. If B/feminism were a reality, we would have directly assassinated and murdered Afrikan-American feminists, activists, and Revolutionesses to worship.
Instead, the closest we can come are the Ida B. Wells-Barnetts, Angela Davis’s, Assata Shakurs, Fannie Lou Hamers, Winnie Mandela types. All deceased, run overseas, or in a foreign land.

Needless to say, North Amerikkka’s B/feminist, colonial accepters have been whorified into feeling to sleep with and work under a white male is freedom. They have been intimidated and serf-minded into feeling that intimate acceptance of the world encroacher and invasionizers is “heaven.” Slavocracy’s REPARATIONS is more anointing a movement than B/feminism!

No names in a shameful sense are needed in this article, so I will say that an Oscar winning actress of ours feels that after two failed marriages with Blackmen, and who knows how many relationships, she’s finally blessed to be impregnated by a white male. Still, she has to bare[ry] it all in every film she makes—in intimacy with the very men that daily try to shame, humiliate, and mentally dysfunctionalize her men. The people patting them with “at-a-girls” must have forgotten men died for all feminism’s, even if all it gets us is “he hurt me” songs and no praise/thanks.

B/feminists somehow feel that their archenemy is the B/man. Instead of recognizing that God never places a natural couple to be the innate annihilators of one another, B/feminists feel that whoever has called her a name last, or “abused” her in any way is her enemy. Subsequently, making their mere lap-dropped job and “personal” money acquired materials, her freedom. Instead of Godfully placing freedom with the accomplishment of Revolutionizing and speaking to the death for her people, the B/female shows her utter allegiance to whoever signs her check. Hires her. Or, has so-called decision-making authority over her. Dominion, so to speak. The deadly sin of idolatry!

Real B/feminists would understand their definition of freedom and that of the white female are not interwoven. As with the case of Affirmative Action, look who’s gotten the biggest piece of the pie, but the w/feminists. The B/female is a distant second, while her God-given mates are pulling-up the rear, resulting in a pre-planned “Mentacide” for our existence.

Until B/females start to irritate the system to the equivalent of, liberation for their boys freedoms from visual, miseducational, penal, underemployment, and homoSINsual influences, they’ll all just be a pawn of the status quo/political pundits, programmed to hate their race, men, and not being able to recall: Thee Almighty placed a Man here to free us all. A Man Of Color!

Any deviation from the total, unequivocal and obedient submission to this holy (co-racial) joint venture will result in the kinds of Wraths we’re witnessing and experiencing, today. No woman is truly free, safe or liberated until she recognizes she’s not put here to be free, but bound by spiritual duties to only seek freedom, justice and equality through the deliverance of her race and mate. Not the power structures of any race that has the [temporary] upper hand. Our personal pain, wants, desires and lives are irrelevant. We are here for a bigger reason than vanity and materialism. ------

Finally!
written by Almah, June 26, 2008
Thank you so much for speaking out! I've been saying this for ages--that Black female pain is rendered invisible in the shadow of the Black man's--but to hear Black men calling out our "addiction to sexism" gives me much joy and hope. I grew up in a family in which the sexual terrorism of girls and women is met with a "so what?"; from the family sphere to the radio waves, we have to endure the hurt that cuts deepest--from our "own."

btw, the negative posts above are completely incoherent and irrational. Must mean you have a point, huh? Thanks, again and always, for your solidarity and love for ALL Black people.

@ BLACKMEN SHOULD CHALLENGE...
written by THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS, June 27, 2008
You know? I definitely agree. This is funny! It's 3 or 4 people not including the CAMERAMAN in the room, but R. KELLY IS THE COMPLETE BLAME? WTF????????????????????

Not saying he's right and shouldn't be punished, BUT WHO ARE YOU TO DETERMINE HIS FATE? Everybody involved should be petitioned, not just Kelly!!!! He should get help and a few years, not hung and a firing squad as you all are making it out to be!!!

In addition, NOT ONE, NOT ONE, NOT ONE, of you were there, so you CAN NOT put your life on it and say that it was R. Kelly!

Now this is all happening, everyone wants to play Bill Oreilly!!!

No one is perfect, and no one can say what's going to happen from day to day. So if you were to make a mistake, should your head be chopped of for it?

This upsets me that YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU, from the outside looking in, Weren't There, Don't Know Kelly or The Girl, would try to OVERPOWER A JURY AND JUDGE to determine A GROWN MAN'S FATE OFF OF ONE INCIDENT!!!

How could you? I can't determine anyone's fate...and especially not being there and only hearing and seeing A BOOTLEG OF THE DVD!!!

Are you all insane?

Get a grip, and learn to read, but especially to comprehend.
written by Chase, June 27, 2008
'this is so ridiculous', can you read? can you comprehend what you read? Did he once say 'send RK back to jail"?

I think if the least Jelani is saying is that RK should publicly apologize, then so what? RK could at least do that since he's been running the streets for the last ten years instead of being in a jail cell like he should be.

We all know that was him on the tape...lets keep it real. He showed his colors marrying underage Alliyah, and messing around with a host of other underage girls, and whenever their parents squawk, they become eerily silent after a while. I guess money talks and bullshit walks right?

Yes, the other people that knew about it should be charged
Yes, there are other things we need to be on top of as well (ie Sean Bell)
Yes, we need to wake up as a people

But we also need to learn how to read something and comprehend it before commenting, and we need to understand that one person can take a stand about one thing without having to take a stand against everything. Thats our problem now is that we can't focus on one thing, we have to make it into a multi issue. Not saying that it's not, but can we get one thing accomplished before moving on to the next?

Jalani....this is right on the money. You know and I know that he did it, and he's done it more than once. This time he just happened to get caught. Sure there are many men out there doing the same thing and I hope they all get caught, but in the meantime, RK is just going to do his mess behind closed doors. Mark my words, this isn't over....it's a proven fact that pedophiles cannot control their behavior for long. And yes as someone said, it's not just RK, but other artists that push the same pedophilic agenda. Rap songs that say "she looked 13 yrs old" or that they want a girl with a "size 5 shoe", my daughter is 16 and wears an 8, what age woman wears a size 5 shoe? Anyway. Great article...excuse all of the ignorant folks, those are the same ones not doing SHIT but sitting at their computer talking/typing and acting like they can even comprehend what a real movement is. Get it together people. Helloooooo smilies/shocked.gif

Thank you for your words
written by KimmyB, June 27, 2008
I applaud you for this article. These are my thoughts as well as the thoughts of so many others. It saddens me to hear our people who support Mr. Kelly say that they have a problem with us who don't because we haven't decided to go after the caucasions who have harmed us.
For me, my first concern is for MY people. And so I will stand up to defend those who have been mistreated (ie. the young woman in the tape). And I feel a stronger outrage for those grown people who are supposed to be there to show our young people the way and they abuse their power (ie. R-Kelly). This dude has been a repeat child molestor and it is sad that he has slipped through the cracks of the system.
I thank you Jelani for the way in which you are asking our black men to stand up and take responsiblity for their actions, and your request that they pledge to not mistreat the women in their lives. If more men would take this type of stand and be willing to step back up as the head of our families we would be in a much better state.

Thank you for your words and I am saddened at the statement of commentor "this is so ridiculous"
written by Nikki, June 27, 2008
As I have heard the jury statements, let me explain something basic to you. The jury hears the testimony and then the attorneys argue over the jury instructions. They BELIEVED it was Mr. Kelly, that wasn't at issue. They believed it was him URINATING on another human being. What was at issue was whether the person he was URINATING on was THAT particular child. These jurors were given instructions that required them to determine if the CHILD in the video was the CHILD (now woman) that REFUSED to testify in open court. What I have just as much an issue with is WHY THE HECK would you look at a DVD containing what everyone was saying was KIDDIE PORN??!! I cannot imagine what would make someone want to look at something like that. From all reports, the people believed it was a child he was URINATING on and having sexual intercourse with. I don't have to be in Mr. Kelly's shoes or pants to find his actions disgusting.

There is a presumption that little BLACK girls are WHORES and they are worthless. And, if some ADULT has sex with them, they are partly to blame. God willing that if you have children, your children will be spared such degradation and humiliation, but I guess if they aren't you will be ok with it because your sympathy lies with the pedophile. Further, if we look at his history objectively, this is an ongoing pattern for him. No one denies that many years ago he MARRIED 15 YEAR OLD Aaliyah without her parents consent. Perhaps it's your mentality. Perhaps you are one of those people who were ridiculed in the episode of the Boondocks. You only care that he makes music to dance to...

Black Man with a Daughter
written by TheReal, June 27, 2008
Where is the petition against Michael Jackson? Does he get a pass?

How bout the parents of the girl in the video where is that petition?

How bout the legal system that did not do the job to your satisfaction?

R Kelly is the reason for all of the ills in our community?

Lock him up today and black folk will be on the road to recovery tomorrow...

Get a grip.

I have a bigger bone to pick with Robert Johnson(BET Founder), Sean "Pdiddy" Combs & Russell Simmons... who made millions and billions by mass production, perpetuation, and acceleration, of mysogynistic and homoerotic imagery you condemn from Mr Kelly. Perhaps a pass for them as well.

My message to my 1 year old daughter(and my two sons) is:
1. Love and Respect yourself first and always.
2. Never allow yourself to be a victim.
3. Define yourself.

My job is to explain that the world(including entertainment) is trying to do the opposite including some things she or her peers may enjoy....

Truth:
Sellouts come in all flavors, Clarence Thomas to Nelly to all the "Women" in his videos.. btw where is that petition(against the women... oh yeah they were victims)? to one Robert Kelly.

Funny how so many people feel they can say he did it? I cannot, but I do believe this feeling is part of the psychology of being a victim... and some of my people may be victims but not of R-Kelly. I have found in my years breathing that personal demons are easily cast on public personas.

I read with a lot of passion the firm stand you've taken to rise against the mess we see fast - overtaking our society. R.Kelly in particular and a lot of other hiphop artists are losing the music focus - they pass no message in their music than 'adoring' the woman. Is it adoration even? I don't think it is when they make women go dancing naked in front of them as they watch, themselves being well dressed! Fight on and restore the dignity of the black woman!!! A question of Character not Gender!
written by Estellelight, July 05, 2008

I am saddened and disturbed that so called Black people in America and
perhaps worldwide proclaim the disgust at our universal oppression
against the European and the Arabs but have little disgust when
someone within the community exhibits morally reprehensible behavior.
We (so-called Black people/nonwhite people) profess a collective
spiritual connection to God when receiving rewards, praying for
justice within this corrupt system and yet we are found to be lacking
the same virtuous qualities we abhor from the mistreatment of White
people. How any person Male or Female in the community can support the
mistreatment, abuse and/or injustice by each other. We have a
collective outraged voice for Jenna 6, O.J. Simpson, R.Kelly, Michael
Jackson, etc. but when those very actions of murder, rape, assault,
pedophilia, incest are exposed from within this so-called Black
village (community) we are mute to correct from within. A friend said
to me a long time ago. "White people do not take Black people
seriously because we seem to lament the injustices committed against
us from "dem folks" but when our very own commits these same heinous
acts we support and even begin to JUSTIFY those actions. Worldwide
White and other nonwhite people, thanks to the media witness Black
people in America support leaders like sexually exploitative Bill
Clinton the prison population increased under his leadership
along with the large numbers of women and children in our community
that went hungry and homeless since the welfare cuts. The reason that
Black people seemed to LIKE Clinton... he can play the saxophone,
enjoys Negro music in the Negro church and because... TA DA... he had
sexual encounters with numerous women. As if that is on the list of
requirements to appease and ingratiate oneself to Black people. I have
had enough and I have culled the information, analyzed it critically
and come to the conclusion that the worldwide Black population DOES
NOT WANT the end of oppression, exploitation and injustice! It is
obvious that the majority Black worldwide collective (and I mean all
across all categories;educated -uneducated, poor-rich, those living in
the mansions and those living in the streets, those with health care
and those without health care, religious-nonreligi ous/atheist, etc)
want to emulate Europeans values and their methods of operation.
Furthermore, the majority of educated individuals I have encountered
personally and or researched are not upset about racial and/or class
injustice they are just envious that the European mastered the system
of royalism. In other words if and when Black people are universally
in charge sadly injustice will continue to rule the land because
collectively the majority of "us" rejoice in wrong doing and
injustice. Watch, Research and Analyze it for yourself; that is if you
are willing to give up the complacency of BLISS. Estellelight

Judgement....
written by Cheryl Smith, July 24, 2008
I would never forward the petition on to others, nor do I think it's fair. There's a gospel song "We Fall Down But We Get UP". I feel like by creating and trying to distributing this petition, you all are trying to make sure this man stays down. I feel like R. Kelly was genuinely remorseful when he shed tears THANKING GOD. I feel that the public exposure of the trial has put him so far out there that he has learned from his ways. I don't know the truth in his childhood but it appears that he probably had some issues as a child. I don't feel as if he needs a petition to beat him down. I feel like he needs help dealing with whatever issues he has probably never faced and dealt with as a child which filtered over into his adult life. He has not publicly made one statement yet. It was said that he was going to focus on his family, etc. Maybe he has plans to apologize. Maybe he will get professional help. Only God can judge that man. Not me, not you. If he has confessed his sins with his Heavenly Father, WHATEVER he may or may not have done is cast into the sea of forgiveness, thrown as far as the east to the west, NEVER to be remembered anymore. Oh but society, the media, writers, you all will continue to dig! When your skeletons are exposed, you would want someone to forgive and stand in the gap with you, not continue to beat you down! Let's see you start a petition to deal with these amish men sleeping with all these young girl. Attack them, oh no, that's too great of a challenge I guess. Well, should your little petition get you the apology that you seem to be losing sleep over, I hope that you can rest better and allow this man to get on with his life. When I heard of this, all I could do was laugh. I laughed not because of R. Kelly but because it's so funny how we can shine the spotlight on someone else but when it's on us, we don't like it one bit. I'm glad the man has thick skin and that he's a pressure cooker and I only pray that if he has a problem, whatever the problem or issues may be that he lays them before His Father and wait on Him to send down an answer as to who can come into his life to help him get through it. I also thank you for your voice as writers and while I do like your material, all I'm saying is God will petition and whip R. Kelly far better than we can. It's not up to us to bring him down. Thank you for allowing us to voice our opinion and as you should already know, not everyone will agree with you. I'm that person, even if I'm the only one. Be blessed, Cheryl
